This is the follow up to the feature on Michelin House at 81 Fulham Road, South Kensington, showing each of the fascinating art deco tiled pictures in and around the building. These feature mainly Grand Prix and city to city races in France during the late 19th and early 20th Century.
Each of these particular races depicted vehicles using Michelin’s tyres.
The exterior pictures are depicted clockwise from Lucan Place to Sloane Avenue.

Paris – Brest 1891
The Brest event of 1891 was a cycle marathon. The reason for the race being included on Michelins’ series of pictorials is because the bike entered in the marathon used Michelin tyres – which were originally developed for cycles.
It wasn’t just cycles or motor vehicles – here’s an example of Michelin tyres in use on a Parisian horse drawn cart:

Grand Prix A.C.F Sarthe 1906
The depiction of the 1906 French Grand Prix in the French department of Sarthe marks a milestone in terms of motor racing. Sarthe is, to most people, where the famous Le Mans circuit is based. The 1906 race is that which launched Le Mans as a premier circuit.

Paris – Bordeaux 1900.
Paris – Bordeaux, totaling a distance of 1460 miles, was another of the series of celebrated city to city marathon races that took place in the years before Le Mans became France’s premier motor racing event. The most ardous of these early marathons was the 9,317 mile Beijing to Paris race of 1907.

Tour de France 1899.
The Tour de France is the famous bike marathon. It was also a motor race too, held annually between 1899 and 1986. Michelin’s picture commemorates the first ever event.

Paris – Cabourg 1897.
The Paris – Cabourg race was a cycling event. The vehicle was a De Dion-Bouton tricycle. I’m not sure what a motorised tricycle was doing in a bike race. It may have been a proving run to advertise De Dion’s new vehicle which went on to become the most successful motorised vehicle of that time.
