Briefly, this is an overview of the problems of tube trains running beneath the Barbican Estate in the City of London, and the huge noise nuisance that’s generated as a result. My post looks at the history of the estate’s tunnels’ construction and how things look today. It also looks at the noise blight which the residents suffer. Its not something to take lightly, the noise and vibration generated by the trains is huge and has been getting worse over the decades. I also examine the question of running tube trains to the Moorgate terminus platforms. Its illustrated with pictures and diagrams to help establish the situation.

Don’t get caught on the wrong side of the tracks at Moorgate!

To start with, have you ever been on a Metropolitan/Circle/Hammersmith train that terminates at Moorgate? Its a nuisance isnt it! Turfed out the wrong side of town and where one goes in order to continue their journey to Liverpool Street or the Aldgates can be confusing especially in the rush hour. The problem is if one happens to be on a Moorgate terminating service people assume they can just get off the platform there and wait for the next train on to Liverpool Street, Aldgate East or Tower Hill. They couldn’t be more wrong! Those of us in the know do get off at Barbican before there’s any chance of being dispatched forthwith into the Moorgate abyss!

It is for this reason alone these services are an anachronism. Other locations where passengers can find themselves similarly inconvenienced are Baker Street, High Street Kensington and Tower Hill. The Moorgate scenario is perhaps the worst of all these!

The pain, the annoyance of being caught short by a Moorgate terminating service couldnt be any more sobering when one realises this (and the other trains passing through the area) too cause a hindrance to the people who happen to live above those very tunnels. Its something few passengers know of or can even appreciate. And its a subject I shall write about at length.

There have been many reports over the years regarding the issues. The most recent of these can be read here at the BBC and at City Matters. Some may ask, why not an article on the noisy parts of the tube and how that affects the passengers. I could do a post on that! However I think that subject has been covered well in other sources/the media – but just not this one – and its also a more complex situation that the other scenarios!

Why were these tunnels built?

One of the huge obstacles to redevelopment at the Barbican were the tube and train tracks and tunnels that wove their way through the area. The old Metropolitan and Circle underground lines consisted of manly open air section with three short tunnels between Aldersgate & Barbican and Moorgate..The architects of the Barbican, Chamberlin, Powell & Bon, said in April 1959:

“The existence of the underground railway which cuts through the site is disturbing both from a visual point of view and because of the noise it causes. It has long been accepted that it must be covered over if a residential precinct is to be created.”

It was acknowledged the concrete structure would generate noise and vibrations, thus the decision was made to isolate the tunnels – especially where it was nearest to the Barbican concert hall and cinemas. Thus the world’s first built floating slab rail track was built to ensure peace and quiet for the new estate.

Noise was something very seriously considered when the estate was planned. If one knows the place or happens to visit it they will see there are no roads to be had and not a single car or bus or lorry to be seen here, there and everywhere.

Exactly! The Barbican was meant to be an oasis of peace and quiet in the centre of The City. That meant roads, as well as railways, had to be hidden from view. It might come as a surprise to learn the Barbican in fact has over three miles of roads! These are just not generally visible (apart from Beech Street in a ground level tunnel and which also unintentionally forms an all important pedestrian short-cut through the Barbican area.)

Unfortunately the railway, by way of being the most central thoroughfare, happens to be the most problematic for residents. In despite of the tunnels’ advanced sixties construction technology, its actually quite ironic the tube lines are a huge detriment to the peace and quiet of the area. According to consultants there’sa low-frequency “rumbling” which shook floors, walls and ceilings, rattling fittings and crockery’ in the three worst affected Barbican blocks of flats (Brandon, Defoe and Lambert Jones) surveyed.

The people in the Barbican estate clearly find the tube a considerable intrusion in their lives. It shortens their potential sleeping hours. Its been a constant thorn ever since the tunnels between *Aldersgate & Barbican* (now simply Barbican) and Moorgate were altered to a new alignment in order to fit into the Barbican redevelopment. The tunnels are in a concrete box which, despite their advanced design, are apparently excellent for generating noise, with the worst affected flats and apartments being right on top of this box with little in the way of noise mitigation.

The following map I did will help to place the different elements in this particular situation…

As the above text illustrates, the S7 and S8 stock have done little to resolve the issues. In fact it seems they have exacerbated it. Some think its because these trains can carry far more passengers thus their total weight is well in excess of the old C69/78 and A stock which were previously used. The total weight of trains does in fact affect the amount of noise that is made as we will see later regarding Leytonstone on the Central Line.

The noise problem at the Barbican has been evident since the 1970s as records show. One wonders why the seventies and not the sixties when the tunnels were finished? I puzzled on this and then found why. The tunnels were ready to have trains diverted through them by 1965, but they were not fully finished until the early 1970s, and this is the time the first residents moved into the various premises affected by the noise.

Information from TfL has shown the most complained sections of the Hammersmith & City and Circle Lines in terms of noise happens to be the stretch through the Barbican.

Of interest is the brand new Crossrail tunnels. These use the same alignment but are deeper down. They are at least 34 metres below the Barbican lake. The surveyors, having learnt of the gripes from the Barbican, decided to build the Crossrail tunnels much deeper and with special floating track just to be doubly sure no noise from the Class 345s would filter up to the Barbican itself.

The big problem for the Barbican’s residents is Moorgate station. Its both a terminus and a through station and has a number of points which trains rattle their way through. The constant clattering of trains through the pointwork sends people mad. There’s one box, this is the main tunnel, then another, the varying sizes of the crossover tunnel (step plate junction in rail terms if one prefers.) Then another, the tunnels leading to the platforms. It’s like a series of caves where one can create a cacophony of noises, echoing back and forth through each of these chambers, making the din even louder – and its something only the Barbican’s residents could ironically appreciate – because they live right on top of the offending structure!

Brandon Mews gets the worst of the noise from the tube lines. This entails both sound and vibration, even going as far as rattling furniture and fixings within the flats themselves. Gilbert House (the one in the middle) is on stilts above the lake thus it does not have any residential dwellings that are right on top of the tunnels, which means its residents cannot hear the trains fortunately, but they can indeed feel the vibrations as the trains pass beneath.

The design and construction of the tunnels in question

The largely razed to the ground site which arose as a result of world war damage, became the subject for redevelopment in the 1950s. One of the early plans was submitted by Serge Kadleigh and Patrick Horsborough, whom some will know were also responsible for the aborted High Paddington scheme of the same time. Their entry did not win. Instead it was that from Chamberlin Powell and Bon which was accepted.

In order to achieve the fullest potential of the site it was decided the tube lines (then largely in the open with three short tunnels) should be moved southwards to a more direct alignment between Aldersgate & Barbican and Moorgate stations. Chamberlin Powell and Bon designed a special sort of tunnel that would be isolated from the main Barbican site in the hope any noise from the trains would be mitigated.

It was Higgs and Hill, a British construction company, who built the new tunnels and floating track sections.

The new tunnel for the Widened Lines was put into use first and opened on 21st June 1965. Metropolitan and Circle Line trains continued to use the old tunnels for another six months. On Monday 6th December 1965 these services began to use the new tunnels adjacent to the Widened Lines and demolition of the old route began.

The tunnel structure is 305 metres long and what it means is it was sort of suspended across the site like a bridge – and then the space around and underneath used to build utility rooms basements, etc. ‘The tunnels themselves were built with dense concrete walls and a double roof with a large air gap in the centre to reduce airborne noise.’ As for the track itself, the tops of the track slabs had a layer of high dampening viscoelastic rubber on top of which the track itself was laid. In turn the tunnel box itself was placed upon rubber bearings which sat on top of the bridging supports holding the tunnels up.

What it means is a large boxed structure was built, and then within this another boxed structure built. That inner boxed structure would be placed on supports which had rubber mountings (or bearings) beneath to eliminate any vibrations or noise coming fro the trains. As the designers said, it was essentially an underground railway bridge. The box within a box design was also to eliminate as far as possible any sound coming from the tunnels. Within the inner boxed section was the world’s first example of floating slab track.

As it turns out, generally the sub surface tunnels are in a boxed structure and are as far as can be ascertained largely isolated from the main Barbican foundations in its middle section. This is quite fortuitous because the Barbican concert hall doesn’t get any noise or vibration from the tube. Unfortunately its not so clear cut for some other parts of the estate, and this happens to be where the tunnels have not been isolated from the Barbican structure but rather built as part of it.

The following diagram is one I did using a plan from Higgs and Hill showing the cross-section of the tube tunnels. It will be seen the floating track section (marked in various shades of grey) is isolated from the main boxed structure. The black bits are the rubber bearings, about four inches thick. Its not shown on this diagram however this boxed structure too was encased within another boxed structure. The gap between the two would provide a sound barrier and prevent any noise from the trains transmitting upward and outwards.

The big problem with this specialist structure is it does not fully extend to those parts of the estate where there are residential dwellings. This is crucial especially at Brandon Mews, where it has been found the basement of this property and its foundations are undoubtedly stuck right on top of the tunnels without any sort of noise mitigation measures whatsoever. There is floating slab track in part of that section however its rendered ineffective by way of the structures not being isolated.

Lambert Jones Mews, at the west side of the estate nearest to Barbican station, has barely any noise mitigation measures, and its foundations/basement too is sited right on top of the running tunnels. The structure is at the start of the downward inclination from Barbican station so what this means is because there’s less depth below, the residential buildings are sat atop the tunnels themselves and those in lambert Jones Mews get an awful lot of noise and vibration too.

Defoe House, running lengthwise with the tunnels, which do get deeper at this point, does have special mitigation measures (a box within a box and floating slab track) however the structure is generating lots of vibration and noise perhaps because Defoe House is not transverse to the tunnel. I’m no expert but what I think is happening is because there’s so many structures on the same exact alignment (its a boxed railway tunnel inside a boxed structure, which is also inside another boxed structure, inside yet another boxed structure) well its become like an amplifier that increases rather than decreases the sound and vibrations form the trains.

Gilbert House is the one on stilts, but they can feel the vibes from the trains below the lakeside terrace. Even as I stood here I could feel them too!

Gilbert House doesn’t get the noise nuisance like the others do, but it still gets vibrations form the trains and this result is because although the building is placed on stilts high above the Barbican lake, the vibrations from the trains finds their way up those stilts into the residential flats.

The Barbican is all concrete and steel construction, evidently a dense material and a good conductor of vibration and noise. The planners must have known this when they drew up the designs for the Barbican and that is why they stipulated a special construct of track and tunnel.

Very strangely they didn’t afford that luxury for some parts of the estate. Why? The only thing I can think of is the planners had thought the huge Barbican lake would act as a noise barrier, or at least soak up any potential noise coming from below, which it does to an extent. The lake is extremely shallow however (perhaps no more than half a metre deep) so its not that good as a sound dampener anyway. Very unfortunately the lake does not cover those parts of the estate with some of the worst problems.

The picture (above) of the surveyor by the tunnels is of great interest. This is just past the end of the present Moorgate platforms. The top of the tower of St. Giles Cripplegate – which is the church in the middle of the Barbican estate – can be easily seen. Just behind the photographer would be the present alignment of Moor Lane. The east to west crossover at the end of the platforms can be seen behind the surveyor. Above the air space directly would be nowadays be Willoughby House and that behind the surveyor Brandon Mews. The concrete structure seen here above the roof of the train will eventually become the bottom of the Barbican lake!

In a nutshell this construction picture does explain why those in Brandon Mews get the worst from the tube trains. Its because this is where the tracks diverge for the Moorgate terminating platforms. There’ll be a constant thump thump noise as the trains pass over these points. Remember its not just trains terminating here but also the through trains. These too have to pass over the points that lead to the terminating platforms. In the peaks its probably practically every minute or two, that a train thumps their way through these points causing misery for the residents above.

In the image above, the cross is where our guy would have stood as he undertook his surveying work in the 1960s! In the immediate distance above the crossovers would be Brandon Mews, one of the worst affected Barbican properties. It can be that seen the tube dives under the Barbican lake before rising again beneath Defoe House to reach Barbican station. The same bit of concrete structure seen in the sixties photo can also be seen in this one I took! Eastbound trains have two sets of points to clatter through, whilst westbound trains have three sets of points they clatter through.

The other issue is the tracks rise up at this point because they have to reach the Moorgate platforms. What that means is the tunnels are not so deep as the remainder and it obviously meant Brandon Mews had to be, as it were, bolted straight onto the top of the tunnels.

There are six points in this section alone. Two of those within the through Moorgate platforms are perhaps not so crucial, but it means there’s five sets of points through which trains continuously clatter their way. This is why the intrusion at Brandon Mews is much worse than that at Lambert Jones Mews.

Track relaying took place last year to mitigate the worst of the problems on the west side of the Barbican which should resolve the issues to an extent for Lambert Jones Mews and Defore House.

In terms of the above image Gilbert House is in the middle. Its said the first occupations here were in August 1969. On either side can be seen the cross members supporting the boxed sections around the tunnels themselves. Those on the right side clearly have a thin sheet of water (probably from rain) on the top of the boxed sections themselves. Compare this with the earlier picture and it will be seen the inner boxed sections had not yet been completed. The Barbican Centre and Guildhall School of Music & Drama had not by this time started construction which explains why the tunnels were in a still partially incomplete state.

If one wants a real good look at the alignment of the tunnels as they were then, here’s another picture….

One can see from this image how these tunnels just pass beneath part of the Barbican Centre itself. It also shows how the tunnels clearly go straight underneath Defoe House. Again I would think this picture is perhaps 1969-1970. Its clear this half of Gilbert House has no residential occupancy yet. The same goes for Defoe House which still seems to be in a state of construction. The fact this side of Gilbert House (and Defoe House) were not complete at this moment in time is perhaps why complaints about the noise from the trains did not start until the seventies.

The first report of riding quality and generated noise on the new sections of line seemed very favourable with the observation that train riding was much quieter than usual, though it was said a speed restriction was in operation at the time so it was not possible to say with complete confidence whether the new type of floating track had achieved its objective.

On that basis it can be assumed that depite the new tunnels opening in 1965, it as not until the first residents moved in these parts of the estate (early/mid-seventies) that the issue with noise coming from the trains was noted.

So why is it that the trains through the Barbican have got noisier?

Despite the apparent effectiveness of the floating slab track (which hasn’t really been that effective as the problem has perpetuated for more than fifty years) what is now happening is the S7 and S8 stock are somehow causing the dampening properties of the slab track to fail (in other words to become more amplified.) Remember it was said the problem was not so bad until the S7 and S8 stock came along?

There is a difference in the types of tube trains used. The C69/77 tube stock and the older A stock were both 16 metres long (14 for the C69/77 trailers.) The S7 and S8 stock is 17.44 metres (15.44 for the non driving cars) thus it may be the differences in length that is causing the floating slab track to react differently.

Here’s TfL’s explanation re the new S7/S8 tube stock and tube noise. They say no regular in-train monitoring of any sort is undertaken.

Another factor could be the modern floating slab track requires the rails are fixed directly to the slabs with special fittings and mounts etc. That in the Barbican is classic track formation (rails, sleepers and ballast) laid on top of the floating slab track, so there is possibly another factor here. These days no-one would think of building floating slab track and then putting a classic railway track formation (with sleepers and ballast) on top of it!

Thus we know despite the advanced technology used in the sixties, the mistake was to build the track formation as a classic one. Not as how it would be built these days.

The modern suspension of the S7/S8 stock likely does not work so well with this older and very unusual type of track formation. Not only that the bogies are somewhat further apart between the different units (compared to the older tube train units) thus there’s a different weight distribution downwards which is causing the floating slab track to react differently. I’m no rail engineer hence these are just ideas as to what could possibly be happening.

Historical knowledge of rail vibrations

London Underground has known for decades there is a problem with tube trains making noises. There have been complaints since the first trains ran underground in 1863. However that is probably something that was largely accepted in those days (just as there was soot, steam, heavy machinery continuously at work in factories, horses’ hooves making loud cacophony in the street and so on.)

Matters apparently changed in 1955 when London Underground were asked to investigate effects of noise and vibrations from the tube encroaching into a hospital. London Underground conducted experiments in February 1955 to see how far away these vibrations could be felt. The affected premises was the now closed Leytonstone House Hospital (around 400 feet (120m) from the Central Line a short distance from Leytonstone station.) The hospital had found the tube line quite intrusive. Remember the Central Line had just opened this section thus it was a new phenomenon the hospital was experiencing.

The advantage of conducting these special tests at this location was it afforded information on both the overground tube track as well as tunnelled tube track (this being the newly opened extension to Newbury Park/Hainault.) Using a Vibrograph from Cambridge measurements were taken in differing rooms, with different floor coverings on both the ground and first floors of the main hospital buildings. The tests found the vibrations could be felt this far away from the Central Line and in fact the direction of the trains could be discerned too. Not only that the noise from the trains could easily be discerned too on the hospital’s ground floor but less so on the first floor.

Sixty five years later it was acknowledged by TfL this section of the Central Line was in fact the noisiest section of tube to be found anywhere on the network. It was found the noise was much worse when the trains were packed with commuters. Last year TfL began a programme of track renewal and improvement to abate this problematic section of the Underground.

TfL say they have no information on what are the loudest sections of London’s tube system. I wonder how they found out this section at Leytonstone was the noisiest? Further they say they do not record data on tube noise, nor are resources on the tube specifically aimed at the reduction of tube noise!

The use of different types of track

Generally it seems traditional bullhead jointed rail has caused less problems than continuous welded rail or the more modern track fastenings such as Pandrol clips etc. Pandrol clips are practically the industry standard but even so these have had to be developed to help try and mitigate noise problems on railways. The latest types are the e-clips, the fast clip, and others where the interface between the clip and the rail itself is insulated by way of a special tough plastic mount to prevent noise and vibration transfers occuring.

However it seems even the more recent methods do not completely resolve the issues, especially if its welded rail. The traditional bullhead rail used wooden blocks and these were no doubt a factor in deadening the sounds from the rails and the wheels of the trains. Conversely concrete sleepers as opposed to wooden sleepers are a problem as every urban railway operator will know. Concrete sleepers are practically maintenance free but unfortunately make the noise and vibrations far worse.

In the past couple of years TfL has used concrete sleepers far less and increased the use of wooden sleepers for the moment at specific locations on the tube system because of the ever increasing problem with rail noise. However they say its not ideal because its becoming harder to source wood that is sustainable.

Quite why continuous rail would be more noisy than jointed I cant say for sure, but its probably something to do with the harmonics of vibrations and how these travel through materials. One would have thought the noise would be dissipated more, but obviously not. There’s lots of research and equations to show why this happens. In a nutshell its simple physics. Continuous welded rail is fraught with varying forms of resonance which carries the noise further depending on various conditions such as temperature, composition of the steel, malleability and so on.

With jointed track the actual path of the vibrations would be quite limited because it is cut short by the joints between the rails. Plus the wooden keys used to fasten the rails deaden the sounds too. With continuous welded track the vibrations simply continue regardless.

In short it seems the more advanced railways become, the more critical the infrastructure too becomes in terms of noise frequency and so on. And any change in set up (introduction of new rolling stock etc) upsets the balance greatly.

In 1998 London Underground acknowledged replacement of a stretch of track had caused part of the Circle/District Lines at Notting Hill to become even more noisy. They had said ‘the track in that area had recently been replaced with ‘continuous welded rail’ as part of a routine maintenance programme which should have reduced noise levels.’ However it had got worse. ‘In January 1999 LUL admitted that they did not understand the causes of the problem and commissioned experts to review the case and prepare a plan of action to resolve it. They subsequently stated that they understood the problem to be one of ‘poor dynamics of train wheels and rails’ in the area.’

Clearly its a question of ever changing dynamics. Replacing jointed bullhead rail with continuous welded invokes a different harmonics in terms of vibration and noise and so on. Thus the floating slab track in the Barbican has evidently invoked a new set of harmonics which has altered even more perceptibly now the new S7/S8 stock has been introduced. In short what worked to an extent in those early days doesn’t work these days!

The tunnels today

The tracks are suspended above and the whole structure sits on these beams which are in turn placed upon thick sheets of rubber mats (or rubber bearings to be exact) to absorb any vibrations. Secondly there is also a gap between the tunnel wall and the structural basement walls of the Barbican itself as can be seen on the right hand side.

There’s something of great interest in this picture. It seems to me the rubber bearings are deteriorating. And its why someone has placed bricks in the gap – no doubt to keep the structure level and prevent it dropping down in to the gap should those crumbling rubber bearings fail completely. If this did drop the tube trains would suddenly be faced with a short, sharp dip in the track – not doing the riding quality much good – and passengers would also be greatly annoyed!

This picture shows the air gap between the tunnels and the foundations of the Barbican. Where possible this air gap was built so as to reduce noise from the trains. Unfortunately its only on part of the entire length of new tunnel built through the Barbican. Here again one can see bricks have been used to prop up the railway tunnels!

If one knows the Barbican estate well enough in some parts one can actually be standing next to the tube line tunnels themselves! Its not a forbidden thing to do because these are public access areas. Its just the Barbican is a quite a maze and unless one is a frequent visitor or lives nearby one will generally use just the main, busier, public areas. I used to live nearby during the eighties and nineties so know it well.

If one were to get a ladder and climb up into that space they would be able to see the top of the Metropolitan, Circle and Hammersmith tunnels!

The tunnels’ location can also be seen in other parts of the Barbican where service roads run. That leading to the basement of Brandon Mews has a hump where it crosses the tunnels.

What the residents want

What do the Barbican residents want? Obviously the cessation of the constant noise and vibration that has been plaguing the estate for nigh on fifty years. The discomfort to residents is generated from around 5 am to just before 1 am. Complaints have been ongoing since the 1970s without any real resolution being found. As my research shows, its not that any sudden change in the set up has caused complaints to begin. Its just that the first residents had not moved in the affected parts until the seventies, and no doubt they noticed the problems straightaway.

TfL has relaid some track with new welded sections. It also found sections of track where rail joints needed maintenance. In August last year TfL did an experiment in the later part of an evening where trains were made to run much slower, 15mph rather than the usual 35mph. This showed the noise generated by the trains was enormously reduced.

Unfortunately TfL’s plans are to increase the number of trains through the Barbican, perhaps by 2023 or thereabouts. The present works to automate the tube are part of this and the aim of this is to be able to introduce a much more frequent service than can currently be operated with manual train driving. Evidently some are not going to be pleased at any attempts by TfL to increase the frequencies on the Metropolitan, Circle and Hammersmith lines!

The Barbican residents now want TfL to make the experimental speed restriction conducted last year permanent. As one will no doubt guess that is at odds with TfL’s plans to increase service frequency. What’s more is the residents want part of the track system underneath the Barbican closed down for good:

What we would like to see is the removal of the crossovers, where the trains can switch between the eastbound and westbound tracks to Aldgate that’s really key and we would like TfL to have a higher maintenance budget. The Barbican is a particular instance, when it was built the tunnel the trains run on between Barbican and Moorgate station is actually an integral part of the structure of estate so people living in some of the blocks are living in concrete-framed structures that are directly linked to the concrete box through which the trains run and it’s a brilliant way of transmitting noise and vibration to people’s homes. Clearly one of the demands from the Barbican’s residents is the crossovers below Brandon Mews have to be removed. TfL has said this is not possible. However it has too said in other documents if the current crossover at Liverpool Street could be relocated (its within the platform area at the moment which is not ideal) and upgraded, it might be possible to dispense with the Moorgate ones. If that happens it of course would mean no more trains to Moorgate.

The closure of the Moorgate terminus platforms would also mean TfL have a massive asset on their hands – a huge white elephant – and one they could not do much about. That’s because at the time of writing a brand new development is being built above the station site and the plans are fixed. There’s no way the structure could be altered now to accommodate the space left vacant by the four Moorgate terminus platforms.

A possible solution for the Moorgate trains?

There’s a possible solution to it all but it seems TfL is not offering this in any sense or any form. What’s that then?

Its the fact the old Widened Lines tunnel from Farringdon to Moorgate (closed in 2009) could be reused for these short workings that currently terminate at Moorgate. As some of us have said, these tunnels could be used to turn Metropolitan Line trains at Moorgate and thus release capacity on the lines through the Aldgate triangles. Oh no! TfL don’t want the tunnels for that! They want the tunnels for stabling of their trains. Peace and quiet for their non sentient trains but not so for the Barbican residents!

Crossrail has nearly finished its works at Barbican which means the tunnels will be available for the use of trains to Moorgate. The is the view of the tunnels as they head under Smithfield.

The fact these tunnels are not in use at the moment means they are vacant and can be re-used to adopt the very latest floating track designs which are proven to be resilent and would be of great benefit to the Barbican. It would mean trains could terminate at Moorgate without having to go through any crossovers – these crossovers could actually be sited underneath Aldersgate Street (just to the east of the Barbican platforms) instead and each track thus becomes a reversible route into Moorgate. Its no difference in terms of scope and distance from the new crossovers west of King’s Cross station when they need to use this as a terminus and trains are not running eastwards from here due to engineering works or the route not being available due to an incident etc.

In fact TfL have built new junctions at Farringdon but its not for trains in passenger service. Rather its for the series of new stabling sidings they hope to establish along the former Farringdon to Moorgate Widened Lines corridor.

Why cant TfL just put this new junction and proposed stabling lines lines into passenger service and re-arrange the layouts so that there are absolutely no points underneath the Barbican? It would mean the need for crossovers in the old, problematic parts of the tunnel would no longer be needed and the tracks could be plain lined and welded throughout the problematic areas to reduce further noise from the through trains. No more tube trains banging and clattering through a series of points!

I am aware this solution has been mooted oft times before – and TfL are not wanting it. Just thought I’d mention it anyway!

Clearly TfL are forging ahead with their automation plans and in due course the section from Euston Square to Aldgate will be converted to CBTC control. And no, it seems they cant do it all over again just to build new tracks and junctions between Farringdon and Moorgate and refurbish the platforms at both stations for passenger services. Thus some apparent lovely new ideas that offers huge potential for noise reduction in the area are sadly a no-no.

What I think it means is the Barbican residents won’t be seeing any sort of solution they would like in the near future. Instead of just those very annoying crossovers on the lines into the four Moorgate platforms, there will also be extra crossovers in order to implement TfL’s plans to use the old tunnels as stabling sidings! Just can’t win!
